HISTORY OF FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
On April 18, 1969, The Friends of the Library was organized to encourage gifts of books, papers, magazines, etc. It was also organized to stimulate bequests, endowments, participation in memorial book funds, organize story hours, book reviews, and to contribute supplies and other needed items. On December 4, 1969, the first book sale was established in the library lobby. This first sale yielded $67. Over the next decade there were various types of sales held in a variety of locations until the first Friends of the Library Used Book Sale was organized in 1981. Because of the large volume of used books, magazine, records and tapes being donated, in 2000 a used book store was created in the library and open to the public in 2001 to allow for the sale of material on an ongoing basis. In the first year of operation over $20,000 was raised, and these funds, as well as all money raised by the friends, has been used to purchase books, equipment and to help fund the cost of certain programs. - helping to meet library needs.
